It was a while since my last post, but there was lots of events in April that I had to participate. ACTi Elite Event, SPIN (it's meeting of designers of low voltage installations, big event in Poland), I had to prepare railroad model to demonstrate GeoVision Licence Plate Recognition System, May Holidays, and so on...
But I've made some video samples and tests meantime. One of Youtubers asked me if I have some samples form cheap cube cameras with interchangeable CS-mounted lenses and 5.0Mpixel resolution, and one of our customers was looking for high resolution cam with audio for cashier booth. So I've made some tests using new ACTi E13 cube cam.
First look
I thought that it will be TCM-4201 clone - plastic toy-like camera, but with higher resolution, commonly called "soap dish". Well it looks like clone on pictures, but when I took it out from the box I saw that it's totally different.
Housing made of alloy, feels solid, it's also heavier than TCM-4201 (205g vs 160g), it's very thin - about 3 cm (old TCM was 4 cm), it just feels more "PRO".
Just like all new ACTi D and E series, this camera can stream video in H.264 High Profile - which is rly nice, it means lower bandwidth and storage space than H.264 in Basic or Main profile. You can fit 5.0Mpixel/15fps stream in ~6Mbit pipe with max quality.
This cam can generate up to 30fps in FullHD 1920x1080 resolution, and 15fps @ 3.1 and 5.0 Mpixel (2592x1944) .
Huge advantage of this cam, compering to other cubes (like GeoVision, AXIS or Vivotek), is CS-mount. You can easily change lens and narrow field of view, this way you will get much more detail.
First I used build in lens - 2.8mm, then I changed them to Evatar M13VM2812IR - 2.8~12mm to narrow the scene.
As you will see, the field of view with build in lens is rly big! I could easily cover whole room, by mounting it on corner, or just pointing it little bit more to the left.
I've sent that video to one of my customers, and I've get reply like this:
5.0 Mpixel - it's 2596x1944 pixels, so it means I have about 400 pixel/meter on that scene, so that "1" on 1 dollar bill should have about 4 pixel x 1 pixel, and text is like 1 pixel x 0.5 pixel :)
To read that text, with scene like that I need about 6x more pixel per meter (6 pixel x 3 pixel characters), so this customer should buy something like 150 Mpixel camera....
Nope, he need details on this desk.
And here comes that advantage of CS-mount I was talking earlier, 2.8~12mm lens allowed me to narrow scene to 1.4m x 0.8m! Huge bust to detail level! It's cheaper and easier to mount two cams, one with narrowed field - to capture desk, and other one to see rest of his room.
Just check that out:

Product spec
E13 is 5.0 Mpixel resolution model, there is also E11-HD720p and E12-3.1Mpixel model. It comes with wide angle 2.8mm lens.Just like all new ACTi D and E series, this camera can stream video in H.264 High Profile - which is rly nice, it means lower bandwidth and storage space than H.264 in Basic or Main profile. Detail check time!
I mounted cam above my desk, about 1.9m~2m high, 2.8m from ground. Room is about 4.5m x 6m maybe a little bit more.First I used build in lens - 2.8mm, then I changed them to Evatar M13VM2812IR - 2.8~12mm to narrow the scene.

OMG! 5.0 Mpixel cam, and you can't even read numbers and text on that dollar bill!!!11 ACTi SUX!!!111 I need more details!Ok. Lets do some math.
5.0 Mpixel - it's 2596x1944 pixels, so it means I have about 400 pixel/meter on that scene, so that "1" on 1 dollar bill should have about 4 pixel x 1 pixel, and text is like 1 pixel x 0.5 pixel :)

... and mount that thing on his ceiling. |
Question is, does he rly need that much detail on a whole room?
Nope, he need details on this desk.

Just check that out:
